Crypto inheritance and family wallet security

Protect it now. Make sure it reaches them later.

The two nightmares of self-custody are losing the keys and leaving your family locked out. Billions in crypto are already stranded behind seed phrases nobody can find — and the custodial alternative just swaps those risks for someone else's.

SpendTheBits removes the single point of failure without adding a custodian: guardians you choose can help you recover, heirs you name can eventually claim, and until then a stack of on-device defenses keeps everyday mistakes from becoming losses.

How it plays out

A week on SpendTheBits

  1. 1

Guardians replace the fragile piece of paper

Social recovery splits your secret into Shamir shares held by people you trust. Recovery needs an M-of-N threshold and is always owner-cancellable — a rogue guardian alone can do nothing, and the server only ever stores ciphertext.

  2. 2

    Inheritance runs on a dead-man's-switch

Name heirs and a silence period. While you check in, nothing moves — the moment you tap, any pending claim cancels. Only after a long, configurable silence can heirs complete a claim. No lawyer holds a seed phrase in a drawer.

  3. 3

Guardrails and a decoy for the worst day

Per-transaction caps, daily limits, quiet hours and new-recipient cooldowns blunt both scams and coercion; a one-tap freeze stops everything instantly; and a decoy wallet can show a small balance under duress while the real one stays hidden.

  4. 4

Scam protection that runs before you sign

Recipient risk-screening, an address-poisoning guard, clear-signing, and quarantine of unverified scam tokens mean the balance you see is real and the address you pay is the one you meant.

Still non-custodial. Every step above runs on the prepare-on-server, sign-on-device model — your keys never leave your phone, and every automation is a scoped, revocable allowance. See how →

Questions & answers

Families & long-term holders: common questions

What happens to my crypto if something happens to me?+

SpendTheBits includes a dead-man's-switch inheritance flow: you name heirs and a silence period, and only after that period of no check-ins can heirs complete a claim. Until then, any claim attempt is visible and cancellable by you.

Can my guardians steal my funds?+

No. No single guardian holds enough to do anything — recovery requires an M-of-N threshold of Shamir shares, is owner-cancellable while you still have access, and the backend stores only ciphertext.

I'm worried about scams. How does the app protect a less technical family member?+

Multiple layers run before anything is signed: recipient risk-screening, an address-poisoning guard, clear-signing that shows exactly what a transaction does, quarantine of fake tokens, plus spending caps, quiet hours, and a one-tap freeze.
