How to connect Claude or ChatGPT to SpendTheBits

Short answer

To connect Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code to SpendTheBits, add the server URL https://x402.spendthebits.com/mcp as a custom connector in your AI app, sign in with your STB Superapp email and password, and pick the agent budget the AI acts as. Nothing to install and no key to copy. The AI can then search gift cards, check prices and ask you for a card. It cannot pay: each request reaches your phone, and you approve it with Face ID and pay in the app, or decline it. Nothing is charged unless you approve.

The URL is a hosted MCP server (Streamable HTTP with OAuth sign-in). Your AI app opens a SpendTheBits sign-in page in the browser; your password goes to SpendTheBits, never to the AI.

On the consent page you choose which agent budget the AI acts as. If you have none, create a Connected AI budget there: it has gift cards on, asks you before every card, comes with default per-card and monthly limits, and holds no money.

Want an agent that pays by itself, without asking? That is the advanced path: the @spendthebits/mcp-giftcards package runs on your own machine with a funded agent key and pays USDC on Base within the limits you set.

Connect your AI

  1. 1

    Copy the server URL: https://x402.spendthebits.com/mcp

The same URL works in every app. It is also shown in the SpendTheBits app under Agent budgets.

  2. 2

Add it to your AI app as a custom connector.

Claude (web or desktop): Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector, paste the URL, Connect. Claude Code: run claude mcp add --transport http spendthebits https://x402.spendthebits.com/mcp, then /mcp to sign in. ChatGPT: add a custom connector in developer mode, paste the URL and choose OAuth. Cursor: add { "mcpServers": { "spendthebits": { "url": "https://x402.spendthebits.com/mcp" } } } to mcp.json. VS Code: add { "servers": { "spendthebits": { "type": "http", "url": "https://x402.spendthebits.com/mcp" } } } to .vscode/mcp.json.

  3. 3

Sign in with the email and password of your STB Superapp account.

It is the account on your phone. No password yet? In the app, tap Sign in, then Forgot password, and set one. If your account uses a text-message code, enter the 6-digit code next.

  4. 4

Pick the agent budget the AI acts as, or create a Connected AI budget, then tap Allow.

Gift cards must be on for the budget you pick. A new Connected AI budget has them on already and asks you first every time.

  5. 5

Ask your AI for a gift card, for example a $25 Amazon.com card for the USA.

It searches the catalogue, checks the price and sends you a request. The request locks the card provider's price; if that price changes before you answer, you see the new one before paying.

  6. 6

Approve the request on your phone with Face ID and pay in the app, or decline it.

The card is paid from your own wallet and issued in your name. It appears in Gift cards, then My orders. If you do nothing, the request expires and nothing is charged.

  7. 7

To disconnect, open Agent budgets in the app and tap Disconnect next to the AI.

The AI loses access at once. Your budgets, orders and cards stay as they are.

Good to know

  • The connected AI cannot pay, move money or see your recovery phrase. The only thing it can start is a request you approve.
  • The AI sees a card code only if you turn on "Let the agent read card codes" for that budget, and then once. Otherwise the card stays in your app.
  • Your AI acts on the same network as your account. A testnet account gets testnet requests.
  • Every limit, country rule and screen of the gift-card store applies to a connected AI exactly as it does to you.

Frequently asked

No. The hosted server holds no key and moves no money. Claude, ChatGPT or any connected AI can only ask for a gift card. You approve each one with Face ID and pay it in the app yourself, or decline it.

The email and password of your STB Superapp account, the one on your phone. If you only ever signed in with an email code, set a password in the app first: tap Sign in, then Forgot password.

An agent budget made for a connected AI on the consent page. It has gift cards on, asks you before every card, has default per-card and monthly limits, and holds no money, so there is nothing at its address to top up or lose.

No. You paste one URL into your AI app and sign in. The npm package @spendthebits/mcp-giftcards is only for an agent that should pay by itself from its own funded key.

Open Agent budgets in the SpendTheBits app and tap Disconnect next to the AI. It loses access immediately.
